Dear Parents and Guardians:

We are excited about our upcoming class trip to Science North in Sudbury!  We will be leaving HPS at 7:00 a.m. next Friday, June 23rd and plan to return to the school by approximately 7:00 p.m. the same day.  Once at Science North, we will be participating in two “hands-on” Science workshops, one that focuses on electricity and one that focuses on animal adaptations.  Both workshops will be en français with French-speaking leaders.  :)  There will also be time to visit the other areas of the museum, including the special exhibit on inventions and the museum store.
Please send your child with a bag lunch and money for supper (and potentially to buy something at the museum store).  We will be stopping at the Tim Horton’s/Licks/Dairy Queen/Orange Julius for supper on the way home.
We welcome parent/guardian/grandparent volunteers on our trip.  It is great to be able to have small groups of student supervised by adults at the museum.  Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested and available to attend by e-mailing me at a.lindsay@tldsb.on.ca or by writing a note in your child’s agenda.  We have accounted for eight parent volunteers on our trip.
The cost of the trip is $50, which includes the cost of the bus (which, in itself is almost $1000), admission to the museum and two workshops.  Sales of our fundraiser HPS buffs were low by students in our classroom, so I was unable to significantly reduce the price of the trip.  (That being said, if there was a sudden surge in HPS buff sales by the class, which are still available for $15 each, I could make a last-minute price reduction.)  That being said, we would never want price to interfere with your child’s ability to participate in this experience.  If cost is an issue, please let me know and we will support you from the school end of things. Paying for the trip in installments is not a problem either.
Let me know if you have any questions and thank you for all of your support of our child’s learning this year.

Mme Lindsay

P.S.  If you are willing and able to support another child’s participation in this experience, donations are welcome.

End of school year activities!

The end of June in elementary school is always busy and fun.  Please continue to check the calendar associated with our classroom blog for upcoming activities within and outside the classroom.  Note:  information and a final price for our end-of-year trip to Science North on June 23rd is coming soon.   We are just waiting to find out the final sales of our buffs to the upcoming Gr. 4 FI trip, as all sales of the buffs will help to lower the final cost.  Enjoy the weather!  Mme Lindsay

Probability Quiz on Monday, June 12th

Hi!  It is 97% percent probable that there will be a quiz on probability this upcoming Monday, June 12th!  Over the past couple of weeks, we have worked through several probability scenarios/experiments in class and we did a review together on Thursday.  The most important part is for students to show all of the possible outcomes of a probability experiment and then express, as a fraction, the probability of a certain event happening (i.e. the probability of rolling two "ones" when two dice are rolled is 1/36).  Below is the review sheet we did together, which will be similar to the quiz on Monday.  Mme Lindsay

HPS Spring Extravaganza!

Please come and join HPS and the community of Huntsville at our upcoming Spring Extravaganza on June 9th from 3 - 9 p.m.. A link is provided in the information below, so that you and/or your child can sign up to volunteer for this event, which is a major fundraiser for our new playground.  See you at mini golf!  Mme Lindsay

Snacks welcome for Gr. 6 EQAO testing!

The school, in the end, was not able to provide healthy snacks for all of the Gr. 3 and 6 students writing the EQAO tests due to budget constraints.  That being said, healthy snacks for the eighteen Gr. 6 students who are writing the test are now welcome (and for their ten classmates who join them after testing each day).  Please e-mail me at anne.lindsay@tldsb.on.ca or write a note in your child's agenda if you can send in a snack and I will coordinate days.  The students will continue writing EQAO this Friday and the following Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.  Thanks so much for your help.

EQAO testing for Grade 6's for the next two weeks

EQAO testing for the Grade 6 students in our classroom will begin next week on Wednesday and will continue on May 25, 26, 30, 31 and June 1st.  Please ensure that your child attends school during this time if possible.  During the first block of each of the EQAO school days (8:45 - 10:25 a.m.), the Grade 6's will work through booklets that alternate between reading and writing tasks in English and math questions.  Unlike the Gr. 3 EQAO testing, when the French Immersion students wrote only the math portion of the test (and in French), this time all portions of the test will be written and in English.
During this time, the Grade 5 students will be split into three groups and will be working in a different Gr. 5 FI classroom.  They will rejoin us after the first nutrition break.
The school will provide extra snacks for our Gr. 6 test takers.  Please make sure that your child comes to school with a book to read (not a problem for this group!  They're avid readers!) and/or a notebook in which they can draw.
If your child receives accommodations (i.e. use of a laptop to record written answers) as per their IEP, those accommodations will be provided during EQAO testing and they may have the opportunity to write the test in an alternate work space.
As testing happens over our phys. ed. time, I'll be sure to take them outside for some exercise and fresh air after the first break every day.
The EQAO test is one record of how your child is performing in the areas of reading, writing and math.  As well as giving you a snapshot of your child's learning so far, the information instructs our teaching of certain math and language concepts in the future.
Let me know if you have any questions and best of luck to all of our Grade 6's!

Our HPS buffs have arrived!

Our new multi-use HPS buffs have arrived, thanks to Mme Fitzgerald!  The buffs, as shown below, have many different uses and can be worn in many different ways.  Our class is selling them as a fundraiser for our year-end trip to Science North.  The cost per buff is $15, with $7 per buff going towards our total class trip expenses. You can send in your money with your child or you can pick one up directly from the school office, while supplies last!
